How Dr. Nneamaka Ukatu is Redefining Dermatology at UCF Health Faculty Physician Practice
Before she ever held a scalpel, Dr. Nneamaka Ukatu held a paintbrush.
A formally trained studio artist and graphic designer, Dr. Ukatu took a path to medicine that few physicians share, and one that has quietly shaped everything about how she practices.
“My formal training in studio art has sharpened my observational skills,” she says, “providing a unique clinical perspective in detecting the fine details essential for diagnosing complex skin conditions.”
That eye for nuance is exactly what drew her to dermatology. “What draws me to dermatology is the seamless blend of procedural work and medical complexity,” Dr. Ukatu explains. “Having a toolkit that ranges from excisions to cutting-edge immunomodulators allows for a dynamic practice that keeps me clinically stimulated.” For her, dermatology isn’t a single discipline, it’s a constantly evolving intersection of art, science, and human connection.

What Patients Often Get Wrong About Their Skin
Dr. Ukatu treats a wide range of conditions, with a significant focus on inflammatory diseases like atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. But she’s found that clinical care is only part of the equation.
“A large part of my work involves education,” she says. “Many patients aren’t aware that the very products they use every day contain ingredients that can irritate the skin and trigger flare-ups.”
That commitment to patient education extends to hair loss as well — a condition she notes many people suffer through in silence.
“You don’t have to manage it alone — we have several treatment options available,” she says. “The key is starting as soon as possible, as early intervention is our best tool for stopping further loss.”
Closing a Gap in the Field
Dr. Ukatu is also passionate about an often-overlooked area of dermatology – skin care for people of color. Historically, patients with darker skin tones have been underrepresented in clinical research and medical education, leading to misdiagnoses, delayed treatment and a lack of clinicians equipped to meet their needs. Dr. Ukatu is working to change that. Her advice to patients: “Partner with dermatologists who are deeply proficient in managing the unique needs of every skin tone.”
Why UCF Health Faculty Physician Practice
Dr. Ukatu came to UCF Health after practicing in private practice, where she deepened her expertise in surgical dermatology and complex inflammatory conditions. But she found herself drawn to a different kind of practice — one where the walls between specialties are intentionally thin.
UCF Health Faculty Physician Practice brings primary and specialty care under one roof, including cardiology, endocrinology, rheumatology, and dermatology: A structure that appealed directly to how Dr. Ukatu thinks about skin health. “Dermatologic diseases can often be the first manifestation of underlying systemic conditions,” she explains, making collaboration across specialties not just beneficial — but essential.
There’s also the academic dimension. As a faculty practice of the UCF College of Medicine, UCF Health physicians teach at the medical school and care for patients using the collaborative, evidence-based practices they’re teaching to tomorrow’s doctors, an environment well suited to a physician who brings both clinical depth and a passion for patient education to every appointment.
Above all, Dr. Ukatu wants her patients to leave her office feeling something specific.
“I want my patients to walk out of their appointments feeling confident and supported,” she says. “I believe the best care is a partnership, and I work hard to ensure our treatment plans are both empowering and perfectly aligned with what matters most to them.”
