UCF physicians are Orlando's top docs.
UCF Pegasus Health nephrologist Dr. Abdo Asmar has been named to the editorial board of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases (AJKD), one of the top three internal journals on the topic.
During much of his 2½ year-term with the journal, Dr. Asmar will focus on the journal’s interactive blog, eAJKD. He will compile and detail national journal articles on kidney health, condensing detailed scientific information for high-speed on the internet. He will also interview journal authors to create new, informative content for the blog.
Dr. Asmar has been contributing to eAJKD, for more than a year. The blog is an effort to provide research on kidney disease easier, faster and to a wider audience. “The goal is to help deliver some of the difficult content in a more accessible way,” said Dr. Asmar. “There’s an explosion of literature and journals, so the blog helps to summarize them, so that readers can cover more topics in a much shorter time.”
One out of nine Americans suffers from chronic kidney disease, and one of Dr. Asmar’s goals in serving on the editorial board is to provide valuable research information to a broader group of people.
“Kidney diseases are so common, and people don’t talk about them enough,” he said. “I want to increase awareness, and let the public know about the importance of the kidneys.”
Dr. Asmar cares for patients with kidney disease at UCF Pegasus Health, the College of Medicine’s physician practice, and serves as an assistant professor of internal medicine at the college. He also helps lead the college’s new internal medicine residency program that begins this summer in partnership with the Orlando VA Medical Center and Osceola Regional Medical Center. He also is on the board of directors for the National Kidney Foundation of Florida. He called his section to the editorial board “an opportunity that UCF provides for us as faculty and a great honor for me.”
