About 43 million adults in the U.S. provide unpaid care for a loved one with a serious health condition. This labor of love can be stressful on the caregiver and result in implications to their own health; such as lack of sleep, lower physical activity and not taking good care of their own health. The concern about the cost to caregivers is gaining more attention as researchers try to better understand the connections that caring for someone else has on one’s health. NIH recently published an article on coping with caregiving. The article highlighted the success of support groups for caregivers in reducing depression and improved quality of life.
UCF Health hosts a weekly caregivers support group. New sessions are starting all the time. If interested, email OlderLab@ucf.edu or call 407-823-4135.
