Cosmetic dermatology focuses on improving and enhancing the appearance of skin. Treatments can range from refreshing and rejuvenating the skin to restoring its texture and tone, along with reducing imperfections such as:

  • Acne
  • Scars
  • Stretch marks
  • Skin discoloration
  • Age spots
  • Lines and wrinkles

Some of the most common cosmetic dermatology procedures include:

Botulinum Toxin (Botox Injections)

This purified form of botulinum toxin A works by blocking the nerves that contract muscles, softening the appearance of wrinkles. It is an FDA-approved procedure, so you can be assured that not only does it work, but it’s safe as well. The effects are only temporary, but the injections can be done rather quickly and require no recovery time.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are a naturally-derived or synthetic material that is directly injected into skin with the purpose of plumping that area to the point where the wrinkle, depression or fold is gone. There is no downtime and you can resume most activities right away. While Botox only lasts 3-4 months, dermal fillers can last from six months to two years.

Chemical Peels

A chemical peel is a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin on the face, neck or hands. A chemical solution is applied to the skin that causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off. The new, regenerated skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin, and is also temporarily more sensitive to the sun.

Laser and Light-based Treatments

Laser and light-based treatments have the ability to reduce facial wrinkles and skin imperfections, such as blemishes, acne scars or veins. The technique directs short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin to improve skin tone and texture. There are various types of laser treatments. Your doctor will help choose the right treatment for you based on your desired outcome.

With most laser treatments, there is a little downtime. There is rarely significant discomfort afterward. Depending on what type of lesion is treated, you may see results immediately or require a series of treatments.

Thanks to advances in cosmetic dermatology, many of our skin’s imperfections can be greatly improved quickly and relatively pain-free. When looking for a cosmetic dermatologist, make sure to do your research and choose someone with a dermatology license who has training and background in cosmetic dermatology. If you are unsure about which procedure is best to treat your skin concerns, talk with your dermatologist about what treatment can best achieve your desired results.
