According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women will develop breast cancer at some point in her lifetime. This year alone, about 231,840 new cases will be diagnosed, and approximately 40,290 women will die.

While these statistics are staggering, it’s important to note that death rates have been on the decline since 1989, thanks in part to earlier screening and detection methods.

UCF Health has teamed up with Florida Hospital Women’s Mobile Wellness and Florida Radiology Imagine (FRi) to offer affordable screening mammograms on Thursday, August 13, from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., at the practice’s location at 3400 Quadrangle Blvd. facing University Blvd.

Wondering if you’re due for a mammogram? For early detection of breast cancer, the Cancer Society recommends yearly mammograms starting at age 40 and continuing for as long as the woman is in good health

If you have a family history of breast cancer or are aware of a genetic condition or other factor that increases your risk of the disease, an MRI may be conducted along with the mammogram. Talk to your physician about your history so he or she can adjust your personal screening guidelines and prevention strategies accordingly.

In addition, all women should know how their breasts normally look and feel, and report any breast changes to a healthcare provider immediately. Women should begin conducting breast self-exams in their 20s.

To register for the mammogram event at UCF Health, simply call (407) 303-1615. You don’t need to be a UCF Health existing patient to have the mammogram done. Prescriptions are not necessary, but appointments are required. The screening is covered by most insurance companies, and the cost for self-pay is $81. If you require financial assistance, call (407) 303-1488 to see if you qualify.

Remember, a screening mammogram only takes about 15 minutes. It’s easy, relatively painless and an excellent investment in your long-term wellbeing.
